The Smart Strip is a high quality surger protector that saves energy by shutting off peripheral equipment when the main item is put into an energy saving mode. You simply plug the main unit (ie: Computer) in to the "controller" plug, then plug peripherals (ie: printer, monitor) into the "controlled" outlets. When the strip detects the main item (in this case, computer) goes into a power saving mode, it will automatically shut off power to the other equipment (in this case, printer and monitor). The strip also offers two plugs that are always on, no matter if the Controller is on or not.
